Lombardi: We might possibly be trying L4D/L4D2 crossplay
Category: Specific Game -
Post Date: Jul 7, 2009
Doug Lombardi, Valve's marketing VP, has spoken to TVG regarding Left 4 Dead 2.It seems that they might, possibly, be doing a cross-play system for the two games (Incidentally, a demand of the 37,000+ collection of boycotters).
Officially, the word is:
"That's something that we're trying to work out the details of right now,"
"So nothing specific to say today, but we understand that it's a very valid thing to be working on and looking at."
Once again it's been stated that they're working to make all mods done with L4D in mind are compatible with L4D2.
However, given the track record for promises and the follow up on said promises, it'd be understandable if it's not taken without a pinch of salt.

Im pretty sure that what the boycotters wanted. They didnt want to split up the l4d community with a new game.

I'm sure they'll find something to take issue with

Does this mean that L4D players will be able to get L4D2 content as a DLC(premium, obviously)? For that to work players would need access to the same content. Which would mean that L4D gets the new AI system too.
Essentially, that would mean that it is just a L4D expansion, which is exactly what it should have been all along. I'd be quite happy with that, if that's their intention.
I doubt that console gamers can expect anything like that though.

The details are scarce, probably because it's only being thought about at the moment.
I find it unlikely that there'll be an 'expansion' system going on.
The way I see it going is, for PC, using Steam to link the two. The only way I can see it working on 360 is to have the original installed, so it can access both that data and the 'sequel' at the same time. Especially given that they're citing the size of the 'sequel' as a reason for shipping it as a new game not DLC. Seems unlikely they'd fit the old and new on the same disc. I could be totally wrong, though, and if they do, I expect there'll be more complaints that it should have been DLC.
I guess it's a wait and see thing.

I suppose they could offer L4D2 at a substantial discount to L4D owners. That would effectively amount to the same thing.
As for too much content, GTA 4 and Empire Total War are 15GB. L4D isn't even 5GB. Given that it's in the same price bracket, its antiquated engine and limited content cast serious doubt on any claim that L4D2 is somehow too big. It only has one more scenario than the first along with a few more weapons.
It's way more than could ever be given away, granted. But nowhere near enough for another separate full price title.

Personally, I think the size thing is BS too.
Yeah - I don't object to the charge for it, I object to the idea that it's a seperate game. At best it's DLC.

And why divide the community like this anyway?
I can only assume that they're under pressure to get one full title out the door this year and this was the closest thing they could manage. That's about the only reason for this decision that makes sense to me. So it might simply be pressure from EA because Episode 3 is gathering dust.

It does seem weird, doesn't it.
I guess only time, really, will tell how the community'll roll.
If they do it so both games share the same lobby, and they patch both games at the same time, even if it's only to re-write the version number on L4D1 when there's only an L4D2 fix, then it might work acceptably enough for the boycotters, but hey.
We'll have to wait and see, huh.
